Through the reading of Mr. Ignacy’s memoir, we learn the history of Mincl’s shop and the fate of young — and later adult — Stanisław Wokulski. The old clerk writes about his friend’s exile after the 1863 uprising, his marriage to the widow of the shop’s owner, Jan Mincl, and the beginnings of his mad love for Miss Izabela Łęcka.
