The Battle of Cherbourg was one of the most decisive military offensives of the D-Day landings. The Cotentin town with its deep-water port was a crucial issue for the Allied forces. It was the American soldiers of General Collins who had the heavy responsibility of bringing down the town transformed into a fortress by the Germans. It would take eight days of fighting mobilizing naval, air and land forces for the Allies to seize the Channel town.
