In 911 AD Charles the Simple, King of West Francia, granted the County of Rouen to a Viking warleader called Rollo (Hrólfr in Old Norse), starting a process that would lead to the formation of the Duchy of Normandy. While Rollo's followers were originally Old Norse-speaking, sea-faring, pagan, Viking Age Scandinavians bent on plunder, within several generations they were unrecognisable, having become French-speaking, Christian feudal overlords.
