Perhaps the most gifted general to come out of Scotland in the 17th century, David Leslie is unfortunately a little known Scottish hero who fought for his religion, country, and even at times, his King. David Leslie led the charge for the side of parliament, the famous Covenanters, to many victories against the Royalists in both Scotland and south of the border in England thus taking part in both the Scottish and English Civil War or War of the Three Kingdoms as it's sometimes termed. Before this he served in the Swedish Army of the 17th Century and saw action against the Russians in Polish service during the Smolensk War.
