Chris tells her that Tara has cashed in her investment in the business and has bought her out in Joseph’s name, so it keeps the farm within the family. As he is Joseph’s father and guardian, it allows him to give Joseph’s vote at any meeting and gives him more shares than Zoe, so she will never cross him again. Richie invites Robert and Victoria round to his house for tea sometime during half term. Following the argument last night, Robert has been left to pick up the pieces, Andy has run off, Kathy has walked out, and Victoria has been left on her own. Robert returns to the house and finds a frightened Victoria hiding under the table and tells her what happened. Kathy and Emily arrive at the farm and Robert tells them about Andy running off. Andy heads into the village and tells Cain that he has left home and that Kathy has walked out on them. Cain takes Andy to The Woolpack for a drink. Emily catches up with the pair. She implores Andy to come home and he agrees, especially after he is told that Victoria was left on her own. Meanwhile, Jack is feeling helpless in prison. His family is falling apart and there is nothing he can do about it. He talks to his cellmate Harry about his trust in Kathy and worries about how much the kids are going to be scarred by this experience. She tries to explain to him how difficult the boys have been and puts it down to confusion about what is going to happen to them and the farm. She tells him about the land agent's visit and how he told her that the farm would be easier to sell without the animals. Kathy thinks Jack should hang on until after the trial, but he tells her to go ahead, as he can not afford to wait any longer. Len, Sean's dad, arrives at the house to a warm greeting from Ollie and an awkward hello from Angie. Len heads to The Woolpack and finds Sean drinking on his own. Sean is surprised to see him and Len demands to know what has been going on between him and Angie. Sean tells him about his relationship with Tara and how much he wants Angie back. Kathy takes the boys to see Jack in prison. He explains to Robert and Andy how he doesn't want them to be witnesses in court for them; no-one can force them to do it, but his barrister thinks it might be the only way he will be acquitted. He asks the boys to have a think about it. Chloe calls round to Scott's and wonders when her car will be ready. She talks him round into going for a test drive at lunchtime. While out on the road, they come clean about the games they had been playing. After a picnic by the side of the road, they kiss, but they end up stranded in the middle of nowhere when the car doesn't start.

Marc stalls the car for the fifth time, Donna teases him whilst Bob tries to calm his nerves. Gloria becomes concerned for Paddy when he throws Mandy's birthday card in the bin. Carol finds Terry in The Woolpack and confides in him about why she did it. Terry is extremely furious with her and gives her an ultimatum - tell Viv or their relationship is over. Later in the restaurant, Carol confesses that she is one who bought the B&B. Viv is understandably enraged and tells Carol to pack her bags and leave. Meanwhile, the prospect of giving evidence leads to friction at the Sugdens; Harry helps Jack prepare for the trial; Eric has an unexpected treat when Gloria stays the night; and Nicola discovers that Bernice is pregnant when Bernice suddenly has a dizzy spell at breakfast.

Jack wrestles with his conscience as the family crumble around him. Kathy and the boys head to the prison to visit him, but Robert clearly doesn't want to be there. Viv’s anger increases and battle lines are drawn. Along with Donna, she throws Carol's clothes out of the bedroom window in full view of the public. Eric tries to sneak Gloria out of the flat, but as they head down stairs in the restaurant, Betty catches them. At the Dingles, Eric falls foul of his own security arrangements when he is hit in the groin by a large sack and is knocked out by Cain. In The Woolpack, everyone talks about the impending trial, and doubt starts to reign about Jack's innocence, but Rodney leaps to Jack's defence and says that he is innocent until proven guilty.

Jack told him to ring 999, and Jack went down to the barn as he could hear noises in there. Robert said he got a sinking feeling when he saw Richie coming out of the barn and he realised that his mother would be there too. Robert says that Richie was coughing and grabbed his father and said what have you done. Jack had no idea what he meant. Robert says it was like a bad dream. Richie wanted to go back in the barn, but he was in no fit start so Jack went in instead. Robert admits to never ringing 999 as he was so worried about his mother and father. Nicola arrives at Jack's house to see Emily. Ed is playing with Emily. Nicola goes into the kitchen and tells Ed how much trouble he has caused, she says he is like the Scarlet Pimpernel. Richie says he realised he is dealing with someone's life and he was just confused earlier. Diane tells Betty and Alan that she hates the waiting. Betty says it is taking so long because Richie changed his evidence. Alan says that there is a bad case against Jack. A guard goes to get Jack from his cell to take him to the courtroom. Meanwhile, the trial may be over for Jack but the questions haven’t stopped as the press keep ringing the house. Robert heads over to Richie's and demands to know why he changed his statement and who started the fire. Angie calls round to tell Richie that the police have closed the case; they still believe Jack did it, but they can't try him for the same crime twice. The news is relayed to the Sugdens, much to Robert's dismay. When Ed calls round to collect the Dingles discarded junk, Lisa says he can have them for free, under one condition - he comes round for tea. In The Woolpack, Jason tells Zak and Cain about Ed coming for tea and they head straight back to the house, under the assumption that Lisa's playing away. Zak explodes when he discovers Ed in the house, but Lisa puts him in his place by telling him that he's there for Emily, and Zak simmers down. Ed confesses that he and Emily met a few weeks ago, but lost touch, then got back. Zak grabs Ed by the scruff of his neck when Emily says that Ed received a message from Butch and accuses the young lad of being a conman. He warns Ed not to speak about Butch again and throws him out.

Following her row with Zak last night, Emily packs her bags, leaves the Dingle homestead and moves in with Paddy. She finds Paddy talking on the phone, and enquires. He tells her that it was Zak and Lisa. Emily makes it clear to Paddy that she does not want anyone to speak on her behalf and she has the right to talk to who she wants. Ed calls round to the Dingles to see Emily, but is greeted by Cain, who tells her that she staying at Paddy's, and offers to give him a lift there. On the way, Cain stops and orders Ed out of the van. He warns Ed to leave Emily alone and stay away from the village. The sinister warning leaves Ed scared for his life. That night, he calls round to Paddy's, just to say goodbye to Emily, as he can't cope with all the aggravation from the Dingles. Meanwhile, Gloria wears Eric's necklace at the vet's, but takes it off and puts it in her bag for safekeeping.

Eric smugly tells him that consumerables and fittings were not a part of the tenancy agreement. Marlon is finally pushed to his limit when Virginia and Andrew complain about the service and furiously throws everyone out. Marlon's holed up in bed, full of regret about last night's outburst. Tricia makes a compromise with Chris; if the restaurant can be filled up to the brim with customers, then he leaves Marlon alone. She puts her plan, a two-for-one discount, into action, scurrying around the village handing out leaflets, and phoning Radio Hotten to advertise the offer. Tricia's initiative leaves Marlon sceptical, but as the evening looks to be a success, Marlon's spirits appear to be lifted. After closing, Tricia drops the bombshell to him that she was offering everyone half price, which disappoints him, but he understands why she did it. Meanwhile, Gloria heads to a pawnbrokers and gives away her watch, but the owner offers her £300 for it, £200 less than she needs to pay Eric.

Gloria fights for life as the truth hits home for Eric and Ashley. Gloria comes round in hospital to find Ashley at her bedside, and, mistakenly, believes him to have been the one who saved her. When Ashley explains otherwise, Gloria is pleasantly surprised. She wouldn't have thought of Eric as her knight in shining armour, but she sees a side of him that wasn't apparent before. It soon becomes clear that trying to kill herself wasn't the answer and her friends rallied round her. She then realises she should have turned to them in the first place and is very happy to have the chance to accept their offers of help. It feels good to have off-loaded the guilt she was harbouring. Meanwhile, there's gossip in the village as the Sugdens return from Spain and Tricia’s miffed when Cain and Zak arrive bearing unwanted gifts for her and Marlon.

Paddy’s stunned to hear from Zoe about Gloria and blames Eric for her despair, but when Eric feels no sympathy and intimates that Paddy had at one point felt like Gloria did after Mandy left him, Paddy, enraged, grabs him and furiously tells Eric that he doesn't know how he felt, but that is not the case. Eric tells a stunned Paddy that he, too, tried to kill himself. Robert finds Richie in the street and demands to know who killed Sarah, but when Richie refuses to divulge who did it, Robert hurls a rock through Richie's car window. Alan questions Jack over his intentions towards Diane, but Jack assures him that he hasn't got any.

Chris is becoming more and more possessive over Charity and when she slips off for the day with Zoe, he's sent on the warpath to find her whereabouts. Jason finds an unordinary friend in Edna while Angie and Cain arrange a rendezvous at the Reynolds' house with the family out for the night. In an attempt to help Marlon, she humiliatingly asks for her job back at The Woolpack, whom Bernice refuses. The lads from Tenant House and Ashley put on their running shoes and compete through a jog around the village. Bernice's world comes crashing down around her when, already reeling from her row with Tricia, she goes to the hospital for her first scan - only to be told she has lost the baby. When she and Ashley arrive at the hospital for the scan, they don't even consider the possibility that something could be wrong - they're too busy chatting about how happy they are. But when the nurse performing the scan hurries off to fetch a doctor, Bernice soon realises that something is very wrong, and it's not long before her worst fears are confirmed. Bernice has what is called a missed miscarriage - she probably miscarried a few days earlier, but the baby hasn't come away properly yet, which is why she hadn't realised. Inside the house, the Dingles are suffering from a hangover. Jason arrives and reminds them that 5pm is the deadline. When they head outside to continue on with the work, Zak, Lisa and Jason realise their tools have been stolen. The building inspector comes round and proclaims that the building is up to standards and will overlook the drains since Eric is a county councillor, but Eric insists he must check the drains. All six supects - Sean, Terry, Rodney, Marlon, Scott and Andrew - are there and Chris plans on trying to get the better of each and everyone of them until he can pinpoint Charity's lover. Zak and Cain have their own idea of how to make the party go with a bang. They menacingly decide to visit Home Farm in a bid to wreak vengeance on the Tates for Butch's death but are forced to get physical sooner than they had planned when they are discovered breaking in. Unable to live with the lie any longer, Bernice admits that life with Ashley is not as rosy as she hoped it would be. Chris is shocked to see that Charity has been beaten up. On learning that her injuries were caused by a Dingle, Chris confronts Zak and demands to know why he attacked Charity. Zak is confused as to what he is on about, but puts two and two together and realises that it must have been Cain. The plot thickens when they follow him to a second and third rendezvous. First, he visits the lady owner of a B&B, then he meets yet another woman with more children. Viv is suitably furious and confronts Bob in a rage, demanding an explanation, but in the end it turns out that Bob wasn't seeing another woman, he was visiting his sister-in-law and his kids from his previous marriages. On his way home, he is stopped by the police and questioned about a robbery. Intent on getting his own back, he tells the police officer that he has an alibi; he was with Angie. Angie is shocked when there was a knock at the door and she finds Cain and a police officer standing before her. Angie lies and tells the police that she was with Cain earlier in the day. With her daughter's betrayal weighing heavily on her mind, Diane turns to Jack for advice. She tells him that she intends to confront Carlos about his affair with Bernice, and Jack warns her to be careful about interfering. Diane finds Carlos in the Woolpack and he is left devastated when she makes it clear that his affair with her daughter must end. If his constant presence is not enough, a series of malicious phone calls threaten to throw her over the edge. After retiring to bed, a sudden noise throws her into a panic, and she decides to investigate. But she is left looking for an excuse for her behaviour when she narrowly misses Len with a cricket bat. Spurned lover Cain seems set on destroying the Reynolds family when he turns his attentions from terrorising Angie to making a play for her teenage daughter, Ollie. During a game of truth or dare with her friends, Ollie gets upset when Ben asks her if she was still a virgin. A shocked Ollie runs out of the house and straight into Cain who is lurking outside. Cain wins Ollie's confidence by giving her some advice and soon there's a distinctly flirtatious atmosphere between the pair.

He discovers Gloria taking a large amount of money from the safe and hears her telling the waiting taxi driver to take her to the station. Sam finds Eric in the Woolpack and informs him of Gloria's plans. Eric then rushes off to the station, but he doesn't get there in time. Jack meets Andy's girlfriend Katie when they return from their date to watch TV at the farm. Katie receives a text message on her mobile phone and replies, saying she's having a great time! When Katie is picked up she tells Andy she enjoyed the evening and kisses him. Jack feels that Robert isn't sounding himself after a telephone conversation, and feels he might be ready to come home.

Cain's news wreaks havoc on the Reynolds family and accusations fly from all sides. Angie tries to restrain an outraged Sean who is desperate to get even with Cain for destroying his family. Cain laughs in Sean's face and winds him up further by comparing Angie and Ollie. Sean's blood boils and he eventually snaps, lunging out of control at Cain. Cain offers no resistance as Sean beats him to a pulp, simply encouraging bystanders to witness what was happening. Sean has fallen into Cain's trap, the police are called and Sean is arrested for assault. A devastated Ollie turns to Danny for comfort.

Emmerdale's teenagers are gearing themselves up for their big night out on the town - blissfully unaware of the horror that lies in wait for them. The evening doesn't go well for Andy who is barred from entering the nightclub and forced to tramp the streets as his friends and even his girlfriend dance the night away inside. Andy has to resort to some chips and a can of 'Safeway' lemonade from the club, brought out by Donna. He then goes walkabout and gets the blame as they miss the last bus home and in a desperate bid to impress Katie, Robert, Eve, Donna, Marc and Ollie, he sets about stealing a car. Against their better judgement and with Marc at the wheel, the gang of seven then begin a joyride home that quickly turns to tragedy and so begins a living hell. The regulars enjoy a theme night at The Woolpack but Cain draws attention to himself by splashing out with £20 notes. Nicola has returned refreshed from her time away and confirms to Carlos that she is pregnant.

The nightmare continues for the seven deadly sinners as they reel with shock when they realise who they have killed. It is their Head-Teacher, Miss Strickland. Panic ensues and the seven teenagers argue as to how best to deal with the situation. Andy suggests that they should call the police but they eventually agree on a drastic course of action. The youngsters decide to torch the car in a bid to destroy any evidence that may link them to the death. The horror of the night unites the group in fear. Andy and Robert put aside their differences, while Eve and Marc are drawn together. The theme night at The Woolpack proves a roaring success. Bernice tries desperately to smile through the pain and confusion she is feeling but finds herself preoccupied by the news that Nicola is carrying Carlos's baby. Marc is terrified when he sees the police coming out of Eve's house. He decides to do a runner, but his plans are scuppered when he finds the police waiting for him on his doorstep. His resolve is tested to the full when he is told that there is a small discrepancy between his and Eve's stories. Angie is surprised by Sean's reaction when she tells him that she is thinking of selling up and moving away from the village. She is furious to discover that he has spoken to a solicitor about a divorce and as far as he is concerned the house would have to be sold anyway. Their anxiety is further heightened when they see Andy in a police car and Eve suggests that they should say Andy is lying if they are questioned. The Dingles throw a party to celebrate Paddy and Emily's blossoming relationship. Paul is taken aback when he realises Jason delivered his son. Feeling a little put out he begins to question the amount of time Jason is spending with Latisha and his son. Jason retaliates, and asks Paul if hitting a woman would make him a real man. Tensions are mounting as the teenagers discover that an innocent man - the owner of the car they stole, has been arrested over the hit and run. Andy is horrified at the prospect of someone taking the blame for their crime and Marc begins to wonder whether keeping quiet is the right thing to do. The reality of Nicola and Carlos' impending nuptials become clear when Bernice sees Nicola in her wedding dress at a fitting. Bernice later admits to Diane that she wonders whether she has missed the opportunity to be with the man she was meant to be with. A stern Diane orders Bernice to start appreciating what's she's got instead of wondering what she could have lost. Paul visits Latisha at work in an attempt to reconcile, but she is reluctant to speak to him. Appearances can be deceptive, and that is certainly the case when the new owner of Mill Cottage arrives in the village. Rodney is annoyed to meet the man who gazumped him, but he is quickly won over by his charm. The Woolpack customers are completely taken with him, when he dips his hand in his pocket and offers to buy everyone a drink. But while Ray Mullan impresses the villagers, local villain Cain seems distinctly uneasy about the new arrival. Marc is guilt ridden when Betty shows him a newspaper article reporting that a man has been charged with causing Miss Strickland's death. He and Eve go to the farm to make sure Andy and Robert are still staying quiet. Marlon and Rhona decide to make her last day in the village a passionate one to remember. Rodney spots the ideal opportunity to expand his business interests when he notices that the Holiday Village is up for sale.

But as the drinks flow, tensions mount, and a secret is revealed which threatens to destroy the happy occasion. At the hen night, Diane is amazed by Maureen's choice of entertainment - a magician. Meanwhile, at Chez Marlon, the lads prepare themselves for the imminent arrival of their stripper. But, when their stripper walks in to The Woolpack to ask for directions, the women invite her to stay and send the magician in her place - leaving the lads in a state of confusion. Bernice visits Nicola and tries to persuade her to tell Carlos that she isn't pregnant, but is left frustrated when she refuses, still insisting that Bernice should keep their secret. Unsure as to what to do, Bernice arrives at the church, and makes her way down the aisle to speak to Carlos. But she changes her mind at the last minute and dashes out of the church to await Nicola's arrival. As the car pulls up Bernice tries one last time to persuade Nicola to tell the truth. But, her words land on deaf ears, and Bernice decides to force the issue by dragging Carlos outside. Nicola is incensed with Bernice for putting her in such a difficult position, and reluctantly tells him that she is not pregnant. Carlos is astounded that she could tell such a lie, and in a moment of fury, admits that he has been having an affair with Bernice. The wedding is cancelled.

Marc walks in to the police station and confesses that he was solely responsible for the accident, which killed Miss Strickland. She admits that she suspected that Alice was being mistreated, but her hopes are dealt a massive blow when the solicitor tells her that without proof of abuse, Kathy could face charges of child abduction. The situation becomes even more volatile when Alan tells Kathy that he has received a telephone call from Elsa and she will be arriving in the village tomorrow. Kathy continues to harbour Alice as those closest to her voice their concern and start to question her actions. Alan tries to assure Elsa that Kathy will return her daughter soon, but she decides it is time to call in the police. At the Reynolds', Marc tries to look to the future and put the death of Miss Strickland behind him, but his solicitor has a word of warning for him that brings him back down to earth with a bump. He advises Sean and Angie that Ollie will probably face a light sentence for her part in the tragedy - but Marc could well be facing a stiff stint inside. Marc realises that it was Ollie who revealed he had run-away, but he is forgiving and understanding as he arrives at court with the other teenagers for their hearing. He is told that his case is being referred to the Crown Court and his agony is prolonged. Despite drumming up support for the phone-mast, Jack is under pressure as he faces the public meeting in the village and discovers that many of the locals have turned on him. Edna is cutting about Jack's motives and he is rightly concerned when the phone-mast representative becomes evasive, as to whether the mast will ever find a home on the farm. Jack tries to reason with Edna for the sake of the children, but is outraged when she uses his children as a reason why nobody should sympathise with him. Dumbfounded by Nicola's cheek, Diane unceremoniously throws her out of the pub. Christmas Day hasn't brought much joy for Ashley and he prepares his solitary lunch at the vicarage, but an unexpected Christmas present is on the way for Bernice. She walks without purpose through the village but ends up at church where she discovers Ashley. They try again to resolve their differences, but it proves fruitless. But just as Ashley has given up and turns to leave, Bernice doubles up in pain - the baby is on its way! Ashley accompanies her to hospital where they meet Diane. He is hurt, though, when he discovers that Bernice has asked Diane to call Carlos. The Spanish chef receives a frosty reception when he arrives, not least from a rowing Rodney and Diane and a drunken Nicola who takes a swing at him in the waiting area. Bernice battles on in labour, oblivious to the trouble that is stirring outside.

Ashley escorts Bernice and baby back to The Woolpack where Rodney has the champagne on ice to celebrate the homecoming of his daughter and grandchild. The celebration is muted, however, when Bernice quickly discovers that a pub isn't the perfect environment for a baby. She has problems putting the baby down for bed because of the noise. Ashley insists that they should both spend the night at the vicarage - for the baby's sake. Bernice takes the opportunity to try and talk things through with Ashley but he insists that she should concentrate on the baby instead. Marc's court case is just days away and friends and family are trying to do their best by him.
