Autodale: The Animated Series

After the popularity of "Redone" I decided to create another original animation. I prefer making original shorts because I can be more creative and exploratory. This behind-the-scenes video more or less runs through my creative process when crafting the dystopia featured in my recent animated short "Being Pretty". I created a sketchbook and logged all of my ideas, doodles and ramblings. I explore the themes of the short, the meaning behind a lot of the imagery and my thought-process while crafting this dystopian society.

This is the second part of a two-part making-of series for my animated short film, "Don't Feed the Freaks". This video focusses on the Freaks and their design. The Freaks have a long history in the Autodale series and therefore a long story to tell about their design process and meaning to the themes and story of these animations. I did a lot of research and a lot of drawings while designing them and I really believed that this deserved to be a separate video. In the end, it sort of became a tutorial of sorts; what I've learned to do and not to do while designing monsters. This was just a story and a journey I wanted to share. A lot of this artwork is over two years old and looks like garbage. I find this very hard to watch! ...Hope you enjoy.

Being Pretty was a massive success. It's my most-viewed and most talk-about video. Strange; I honestly thought it'd be the animation that would kill my channel. =P I always wanted to create more in the universe of Autodale. There's a lot more lore that I've mapped out for this world than I've shown in these 2 shorts. This "making of" mostly covers my creative process while working on the sequel to "Being Pretty"; named "No Monsters". I cover a lot of the same ground in this making-of. This is mostly due to the nature of sequels. I had to build upon what was already established. This short was much harder work than the original and took far longer to make. My next animation will be completely new and separate from this series. But I do think I'll probably return for a 3rd animated short eventually. I like this little world too much!

"Children's Toys" is the 3rd animated short in my Autodale series. At least two more are to come. It was really fun returning to this series. I forgot about how fun the imagery and cute/creepy tone are to play with. This video is behind the scenes of sorts, covering the art and themes behind the short film.

The anatomy/musculature of the piece is entirely based on real-life animals. I went to museums and aquariums for reference and I really like the finished result. The sculpture is around 15 inches tall, 15 inches wide and 15 inches long. It's a really bulky piece. He was created using cardboard, super glue, air-drying clay, spray paints, acrylic paints, watercolour paints, pens, a sketchbook, cloth and gloss/matte finishes.

This is the making-of covering the behind the scenes of my most recent animated short, "Don't Feed the Freaks". It's the fourth in Autodale series and it was really fun to work on ...except when I hated it. I did a colossal amount of research and artwork for this short, more than I think I've ever done for a single project. So much so, that I'm going to have to split this into two videos. This is part one.

This video also covers my return to the Autodale universe in general. I've been away from this series for more than a year and its legacy is easily the thing my channel is most known for. This is the short film all of you seemed to want and If I were to return to the series; I was going to do it right. A huge chunk of this video is dedicated to the preparation and research I had to do to get back into the mindset of the universe I created all the way back in late 2016. This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Friendly Shadow". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes of the film. This video is the first of three "making of" videos I'll be making covering this film. The other two will be more like my "Creative Process" videos. They will be covering the design, lore, and creative process behind the "Hive" and "Friendly Shadow" characters, respectively.

This is a video covering my creative process designing the "Friendly Shadow" character for my Autodale Animated series. I don't think I've ever put as much thought and effort into the backstory, lore, and motivation of one of my characters. It took me a long time to figure out exactly who the Friendly Shadow was going to be and I think he's probably my best-written character to date. In this video, I cover my initial ideas for the character, my research, my early drawings and concepts, eventually leading into a 3D model to be rigged, textured and animated. I also cover his personality and his controversial standing on Autodale's dystopian ways. It was a joy bringing this character to life and I hope you enjoy this video covering that! ^_^

This is a video covering my creative process designing the "Exceptional Girl"/"Hive" character for my Autodale Animated series. This was an interesting character to cover because she made her debut in "No Monsters", and was further expanded, 3 years later in "Friendly Shadow". Hive has been part of the Autodale mythos since pretty much the beginning. I've wanted to expand and explain her for years and it's extremely satisfying to finally cover her here. Revisiting and expanding the character after 3 years of hiatus was a strange experience. I didn't just need to redesign the character, but also give her a voice, motivation, and some characterisation. It was a blast returning to this character and to finally explain what I tried to set up back in 2017! :D
