The last of five programmes In tonight's, four abstract artists each paints a picture and talks about the work.
"Paintings are to be experienced. They are not to be understood, they're to be recognised" (John Hoyland, 1979).
In 1964 William Hayter (1901-88) was filmed in Paris; in 1979 Victor Pasmore (b 1908) was shown at work in Malta and in the same year
John Hoyland (b 1934) spent six days with cameras in his London studio. In 1983
Patrick Heron (b 1920) could be seen painting in St Ives.
The programme ends with a short quotation from the 1969 film made with the sculptor Anthony Caro (b 1924), in which he speaks with characteristic economy about his working life.
