The Idol

Moscow in 1966. The young turner Kostya Lopushinsky is wishing to be a photographer, expecting the answer from Sports In USSR paper photo competition results. His snap of the football celebrity Valery Gusko, his childhood friend, was sent to contest. Valery is preparing to participate in the forthcoming World Cup in London. But meanwhile he became suspected in murder. The victim was Regina, the model and the girlfriend of Valery. For the sake of the father, who was Valera’s trainer back then, Kostya is deciding to do his best to help on Gusko.

Kostya is winning the photo contest and is being hired by The Sports In USSR newspaper as trainee. There he meets an ambitious reporter Alla Keufman, which immediately becomes his beloved. Detective Zhuravlyov, who’s conducting the case of Gusko involves Kostya as witness on recognizing of members of the Regina’s company. He’s going to find a guy wearing the white coat and was possibly having a motive to kill Regina. A young lawyer Katya is beginning to plead Gusko. She’s finding the witness who confirms Gusko’s alibi. But the witness plays his own game.

Detective Zhuravlyov is considering Regina’s mystical boyfriend Niber might want to kill her. Kostya’s volunteering to join the spiv’s gang to spot that guy and does do it. In the meantime Gusko’s alibi witness found dead and Gusko occurs under suspicion, having his chance to be released lesser.

Kostya is offering spivs to make copies of the covers of forbidden foreign records to become the part of them. He needs Alla’s help to use of the newspaper darkroom. Alla’s agreed thinking Kostya’s doing the task of militia, but accidentally finds nu photos Kostya has made at the spiv party. She’s disappointed. Kostya decides to quit his mission but at the moment he’s getting a chance to contact to Niber.

Kostya is confused with new mission but now he’s being watched by a spiv called Grundig. Kostya’s willing to make piece with Alla but can’t contact to her. This time Alla comes to Kostya’s apartment believing he’s playing dangerous game. Alla invites Kostya on the date, but before that Kostya must prove his loyalty to the gang. Zhuravlyov is playing his own game using his ex-wife Ira partner, a saxophone player Valentin. This leads to tragic aftermaths.

Kostya comes up having the idea how to contact Niber directly. Alla becomes more feared about Kostya. She’s requiring her editor in chief Asadov to hire Kostya as full time employee. Zhuravlyov also is trying to bring Kostya out of the game, detains him and gives out on Alla's response. He believes he tricks Niber.

Regina’s murder case is delivered to KGB. Zhuravlyov is instructing Kostya about how behave with KGB officer Karilynn. But Kostya’s attention is drawn by Alla. She pulls down Asadov’s harassment, believing she’s lost her job. But sudden news are coming – she’s about to travel London instead. Kostya conflicts with Karpitsyn who is going to make Gusko an anti soviet person. At the time Kostya doesn’t want his now friend Grundig to be suffered in KGB raid. He needs Zhuravlyov’s assistance.

Kostya becomes angry on Alla, believing she’s having affair with Asadov. But the day she has her flight to London he becomes known Niber got a line on Alla. Knowing that Alla is now in danger and having in mind KGB chase him, he and Grundig are having their way to airport. Thanks to Kostya Niber, who almost left the country, is being detained at customs. But Zhuravlyov notes the detail that crashes all previous investigation getting Niber out of suspicion as Regina’s murderer. At the conclusion Zhuravlyov with Kostya are founding out, who is guilty in framing of Gusko and killing of Regina.
