Doctor Haruma Takaie is a critical care doctor at Daida General Hospital. One day, 2 patients comes in, both with heart attacks and both with a swollen eye. Both of them die within minutes of each other. He suspects it’s Chagas disease, caused by parasites, but his medical director dismisses this theory. Takaie’s strong moral compass leads him to file a complaint anonymously to the government. Tomoe Makino is an overachieving government worker who’s been relocated from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the small group called Science Medical Responders Office. She vows to prove herself in less than 2 years, move back to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and get a promotion. Her first assignment, however, is to handle the anonymous complaint filed against Daida General Hospital. And finally, we have Professor Tetsu Himokura who is a parasitologists. He runs his own laboratory, complete with a conservatory called “Himokura Tropical Plant Garden”. He turns out to be a weird, anti-social, mad scientist with a robotic arm. Three of them finds a way to stop fighting among themselves and start fighting to get to the bottom of this medical mystery case. Along the way, they find themselves picking a fight with the system–the government.

There’s a virus spreading around Tokyo that is not the common flu. The first patient, Akari Kanai, was reported to Takishima General Hospital. The Ministry of Health was not very responsive so the doctors at Tashima Hospital decided to contact Professor Himokura for help in identifying the new strand of virus. Himokura, meanwhile, seems to be mindlessly searching for ticks in a large open field. He takes advantage of his new assistant, Takaie, as both a test subject and an errand boy. Takaie even goes as far as feeding the ticks his own blood to cultivate them. When the new strand of virus turns out to be the Heartland virus which first surfaced in the United States in 2009, it leaves everyone confused on how the victim contracted it in Japan, when she’s never left the country? While that question lingers, 7 more people are sent to the hospital with the same symptoms and the pressure is on to get to the bottom of this outbreak. How did the virus make it to Japan? How is it spreading so fast? How can they stop this before this comes a national emergency?

There is a new medical clinic, Panacean Beauty, that is advertising a new procedure that promises immortality. The procedure is based on research of immortal jellyfish which is known to live forever by reverting back to its baby form once it matures enough. The researcher is undergoing the procedure herself and she definitely looks young for her age, so everything sounds really convincing… Except Makino at Science Medical Responders Office found out that 4 patients, including a famous actress, is suffering from dementia and worse. Himokura plan to find out what’s going on by writing a really enticing research paper to grab the attention of the head researcher and the CEO… who also happens to be his old college professor.

A threatening letter arrives at the Cabinet saying there’s a new pathogen that causes people to commit suicide. As proof of that, the letter says that one girl has already committed suicide by jumping off a building, another girl has committed suicide by overdosing on drugs, but failed and is now hospitalized, and one boy has gone missing for 2 days. The letter claims that a particular pathogen is causing this behavior, but is it even scientifically possible? Meanwhile a girl shows up claiming that she and the 3 victims mentioned in the letter were all childhood best friends who signed up for a paid clinical trial together. Himokura suspects that the answer lies within the clinical trial, so he signs Takaie up to participate in it.

Over the last couple of episodes, Takaie has seen Himokura suffer great pains. It’s finally revealed that Himokura has been suffering a type of hallucination called phantom limb pain in which his brain feels pain for his right arm even though he doesn’t have a right arm anymore. Takaie, being a doctor who hates to see anyone suffer, tries to get him help but nothing works. Makino and Takaie decides to approach his old boss at CDC to see if they can figure out what happened 5 years ago. This man starts recounting the tale of Himokura and Iriya in a remote island in Philippines.

Takaie and Himokura are officially recruited as advisers to the Cabinet Secretariat. For their first case, SMRO is asking them to look into an athlete to ensure he’s not doping, before they reward him with a national award. After visiting his house and observing him, Himokura is sure that this athlete, Shun Nogiri, is doping but he is not sure how. Himokura, Takaie, and Makino is also under severe pressure to stop investigating Nogiri after initial reports came back clean.

Makino’s daughter, Mika, is in the hospital for a severe case of stomach flu. Turns out, Mika has immunodeficiency disease that causes her to be more susceptible to common illnesses and suffer more severe symptoms due to the weakened immune system. Makino is both trying to be there for her daughter, look for a cure for the immunodeficiency disease, as well as keep up with her career ambitions. This leaves her boss, Amino, to approach Himokura and Takaie asking them to look after her “as friends” and make sure she takes care of herself. Himokura and Takaie exchanges a look as they’re not sure if Makino’s really their friend.

There’s a haunted poster in the Kigashima Holdings building lobby where red ink is splattered onto a person’s head to make it look like blood. Coincidentally, the heir to the Kigashima Holdings recently committed suicide by jumping off a building. Himokura, Makino and Takaie tries to find a correlation by breaking into the son’s house when they run into Endo, one of Himokura’s old classmates. For some reason, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is obsessively investigating the late son, Naotsugu, and his father, the current president of Kigashima, What are they looking for? How does it fit in with the haunted poster?

Takaie’s mom comes to visit! She brings with her the news that Dr. Yoko, who inspired Takaie to become a doctor himself, has fallen ill in Tokyo and has been hospitalized for a while at Daida Hospital. Takaie convinces Himokura to help look into what’s going on. His worries are proven correct when they show up at the hospital and his old colleagues tell him that they haven’t been treating her at all!
Himokura follows Takaie back to Aibanemura. Takaie reunites with his childhood friend, Tanahashi, and his crush, Misono. They’re having good time catching up until the reality catches up

Himokura follows Takaie back to Aibanemura. Takaie reunites with his childhood friend, Tanahashi, and his crush, Misono. They’re having good time catching up until the reality catches up to them. Takaie finds that the hospitals are overcrowded because there’s only one doctor covering for Dr. Yoko’s absence. He puts on a lab coat and starts helping out. Himokura gets approached by Fukuyama to join the BSL4 research team, and Himokura must make this decision quickly. Meanwhile, Makino is sent to Aibanemura also to investigate the BSL4 site and expose the corruption in Ministry of Labor.
