The Kuwait oil fires, ignited during the Gulf War in 1991, were one of history's largest environmental disasters. Around 700 oil wells were set ablaze, spewing thick smoke for months. An unprecedented international firefighting effort eventually extinguished the fires by November 1991, but not before causing extensive environmental damage and air pollution.
