Ghosts from the past encircle the emergency doctor Kristín as she moves with Lilja, her teenage daughter, back home to her parents in Hólmafjörður as she tries to recuperate after discovering her husband's affair. She starts work at the local healthcare centre and needs to prove to old friends that she is a competent manager and doctor.

Kristín is worried that her mother is not taking her medication and Lilja feels an uncomfortable connection to the world of her grandmother. When Kristín takes part in a search & rescue mission, she needs to work closely with Ragnar, a policeman who is also her ex.

The secretary at the healthcare centre, who has used their position for years to sell alternative remedies, reject's Kristín's ban on the practice, with severe consequences. At the same time, the problems in Kristín's private life mount up.

Kristín is worried about Hanna, the nurse at the healthcare centre, when she notices Hanna has a bruise she is trying to hide. Kristín's husband appears in the village unannounced and tells her a secret that forces her to confront an uncomfortable truth.

Kristín has a lot to do when a group of people starts showing strange symptoms that bring her to suspect they have an infectious disease. At the same time, Ragnar is grappling with his feelings for Kristín.

Kristín has been putting off an important conversation with Ragnar. Precisely when she intends to have the talk, a large explosion rocks the local school and takes her full attention. The explosion causes great tension at home for Hanna.

Lilja is increasingly bad tempered with Kristín and it all comes to a head in the end. Hugrún realises she cannot give her mother the care she needs.

Kristín's mother has not taken her medication for a long time and is in a state of mania. When she disappears, the search & rescue team is called out and Kristín and Ragnar have to work together in the hope of finding Jóhanna.
