Favoured by some, disregarded by others. Few animals polarise as much as pigeons. And yet the birds have managed to adapt masterfully to human life. They are omnipresent: on bridges and on roofs, in squares and in parks. We have long since become accustomed to their company, but pigeons are anything but ordinary. Today, pigeons and cities are inextricably linked. But this was not always the case. The ancestors of the urban pigeon once lived far away from humans - on cliffs and in caves. Some of these ‘rock pigeons’ still colonise the wild coasts of Scotland today, side by side with seabirds. More than 60,000 years ago, humans and pigeons finally became neighbours for the first time. With more than 300 million members of the same species worldwide, pigeons have now become familiar companions that we often overlook - but which are worth a closer look.
