Sparta is second only to Athens when it comes to famous historical Ancient Greek city states and its military prowess and incredible hoplites are incredibly well-known. But one thing less spoken of is that the famous King Leonidas who fought the Persians wasn't the only king of Sparta, he had a co-king. And it was around these two kings that the entire Spartan Constitution was based and operated. But why did Sparta have two kings, why keep the Diarchy when you can become a republic or simply a monarchy?
