On 29. May 1953, New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay stand at the summit of 8,848 meter high Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. The conditions for an Everest ascent have changed since 1953 as well as the conditions on the mountain: the ascent routes are well prepared and secured with fixed ropes - including those on the Nepalese south side, which leads through the dreaded Khumbu ice break.
