Between 1916 and 1917, the Germans built a vast line of fortifications linking Arras to Soissons. On this occasion, they transformed a tunnel located on the Saint-Quentin Canal into a military barracks with numerous first aid posts scattered along the banks. At the end of September 1918, Commonwealth troops received the order to break through this important line of defense.
