I am Malala recounts the early life of Malala Yousafzai, an eighteen-year-old Pakistani girl who speaks out for the country’s women and the right to education. Her book begins in 2012, with a group of teenage girls and teachers who were chatting on their bus ride from school. The midterm finals had just finished, and in their joy, the girls started singing a Pashto song. As the school bus drove along the country road and approached the town of Mingora, two men halted the bus and then suddenly entered the vehicle.
