The family's vacation plans are delayed when President Johnson has to meet with a female foreign minister from the country of Costa Grande, but he soon finds himself having to fend off the dignitary's advances. Meanwhile, Pauletta and Alvin pose as White House tour guides to make some money, unbeknownst to the President and Katherine; and Bernard decides to enjoy his time off from butlering (even hiring his own butler to serve him), but keeps getting interrupted while trying to get some peace.

The adults conduct a practice roast to help President Johnson prepare for the upcoming White House Correspondents' Dinner. While it starts out all in good fun, Pauletta takes things in another direction when her jokes about how Katherine has become boring since she got married lead to Pauletta revealing her grudge over lost ambitions of being in a singing duo with her sister called The Almost Twins. Meanwhile as the practice roast is going on, Charles and Chloe are in charge of babysitting Lucas and Olivia, who end up getting frightened from watching a horror movie.

Rumors abound the Johnson presidency as Katherine is the subject of one that suggests she spends $500 just to get her hair done (in truth, she spends $400). Pauletta sets up an appointment with her hairstylist Keisha to give her sister a makeover – leading to wild and unexpected results when the end result leaves Katherine with an outrageous hairstyle in the shape of the Statue of Liberty (that also happens to play patriotic music and shoots confetti), leaving Pauletta to have to undo the damage. Meanwhile, following his being the center of a false death rumor and discovering that his obituary in the newspaper is only one sentence long, Alvin sets out to make a name for himself by trying to accomplish setting a world record.

During Katherine's first press conference as first lady on a new government music program for inner-city children, President Johnson stretches the truth about their children's musical abilities, and announces that they will be performing a recital. This leads to Katherine recruiting her mother (and childhood music teacher) Eddy (Marla Gibbs) to help them, only to turn practice into a boot camp experience. When her method fails and the kids start playing badly at the recital, Carolyn (Gladys Knight) saves her son and daughter-in-law from admitting the truth by having the children sing a rousing rendition of This Little Light of Mine with her. Meanwhile, Alvin and Pauletta concoct a scheme to capitalize on family canine Maxine's popularity, by finding a male dog to breed with her.
