Through Greenland With Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

What did my father actually do - and who was he? It is no coincidence that Nikolaj's great adventure begins in the most northern Greenland. It was here, at the US military base in Thule, that Nikolai's father worked in the 1980s. And it was his stories of polar bears, polar nights, cold war and ballistic missiles, which really set the imagination and dreams in motion with the young boy at home in the village of Tybjerg on Zealand.

How cold can a toilet board be? This and much more, Nikolaj finds out when he, together with his traveling companion and brother-in-law, Peter embark on a magnificent expedition to stay overnight on the ice cap and experience the climate change at close quarters. And it's not the only trials that the actor has to stand for. Nikolai takes on musk hunting, and it must turn out to be a lot harder than expected.

A trip in the Greenlandic time machine. Nicholas has now been joined by his wife Nukâka and together they travel to Uummannaq. It was here that Nukâka grew up and although Nikolaj has heard tons of stories from the small and very beautiful Greenlandic city, he has never been here. Now, Nukâka and her little brother Peter, Nikolaj, are taking a trip through the childhood country and are living their traditional Greenlandic upbringing with sled dogs, snowmobiles, fishing and lots of robbery stories.

What does a glacier really weigh if you get it in your head? Nikolaj has traveled to the deserted and isolated Greenlandic east coast, to experience the magnificent scenery. A random meeting with the Italian guide Nicco leads him on a unique expedition into a spectacular cave during the ice cap. A unique nature experience, but certainly not for delicate souls. And as it wasn't enough, there are polar bears in the area!

If the Greenland ice sheet disappears, Denmark is virtually also gone. It is pretty much the message from climate expert Jo Scheuer that Nikolaj meets on the last part of the journey. The actor moves into the family's own cottage in South Greenland, where the climate is milder and where agriculture tries to take advantage of the extra heat degrees that climate change brings. This can have a major impact on the country's future and the Greenlandic underground. Nicholas gets a rare permit to enter the country's only gold mine and soon he feels the gold feeder on his own body!
