The freed women are interrogated by the Holy Office, unaware that Gonzalo is their greatest enemy. No matter how much Marie Anne insists on being singled out and thus saving the rest, the Beguines are unwilling to give in. Neither is Lucía, who faces Telmo's rejection by getting the baker to confess his relationship with Rodrigo. Strengthened by their love, they manage to put together the last pieces of the puzzle that leads them to Lucrezia's secret. Their happiness is shattered by the announcement of an imminent auto-da-fé to condemn the freed women.
