Determined to uncover the secret, Lucia follows the trail of the enigmatic correspondence her mother maintained with a Beguine in Leuven. But Catherine's betrayal in telling Munio about the progress thwarts her investigation. Catherine is swept away by the town's fear of the freedwomen following Simon's attack at the festival honoring the Great Lady. The visit of an Inquisition commissioner and Marie Anne's distress, as she begins to suffer hallucinations, place unbearable pressure on the Beguines. Sibila hands Lucia over to the Holy Office, while Telmo promises to do everything possible to get her out.
