In the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan convinced himself that he was in the right by doing whatever it took to free U.S. hostages held in Lebanon and funding the Contra anti-communists. His National Security Council aides did whatever it took to get the job done, while Attorney General Ed Meese proved his loyalty. The FBI continued to investigate. As the stakes were raised in trials and testimony, Reagan's team shredded documents, perjured themselves at trial, and concealed evidence.
