Hortense and Heinrich continue on their way to Switzerland, while Suzanne and Antoine are actively sought by all the authorities. The militiamen, weakened and increasingly worried about their future and that of their families, negotiate with the German commander Schneider for a place on the last train for Belfort; he accepts, on condition that the militia do one last job for him.
