José Inocêncio asks João Pedro not to tell anyone about the machete buried at Jequitibá's feet. João Pedro decides to live with José Inocêncio. Morena gives João Pedro the medal of Our Lady that belonged to Maria Santa. There is a passage of time and the story now takes place in the present day. João Pedro takes the bags of cocoa from the Jequitibá Rei farm to Ilhéus alongside Zinha.
