The year 1879 approaches. The Franco‑Prussian War breaks out. The three sons of old Pasternik are conscripted into the German army: Jan, Paweł, and Antoni. Soon a sinister message reaches the family home — Paweł is dead, and Antoni has disappeared without a trace. Meanwhile, Bismarck rises to power in Prussia, quickly earning the reputation of the ‘Iron Chancellor.’ His harsh policies are also felt by the Silesian Poles. The Prussian authorities abolish the teaching of Polish in the village schools.
