Alya and her lover, the fisherman's son Ivan, live in a small coastal town. The girl's mother, Inge Petrovna, categorically does not like her daughter's fiancé, but she cannot change the situation: Alya is expecting a child from Ivan. The lovers get married, and the morning after the wedding, she finds the groom's body in a burned-down warehouse. At the insistence of her mother, Alya leaves for the village, where, after a difficult birth, she learns of the death of her son.
