At Jim's urging, the group stops at a town so he can fulfill a promise to a fallen comrade: delivering a book to the soldier's father. They are met with strange hostility from the townspeople, who eventually kidnap members of the group. After freeing his friends, Jim forces the mayor to reveal the town's dark secret. The man he was looking for had tried to keep the town out of the war with the Inbit, urging them to leave the fighting to soldiers. In response, the townspeople murdered the peacemaker for his interference. Disgusted and disheartened, Jim abandons his quest and decides to keep the book for himself, a memento of the man's lost ideals.
