After wrapping up their latest mystery, Velma gets a call from her mother asking her to check on her younger sister Madelyn, who attends a college for stage magicians, where apparently there has been some trouble. The gang agree to help and head off to the Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy, located in an old Irish castle. They meet the owner and namesake of the school, Whirlen Merlin, along with his brother Marlen, who acts as cook and butler in the school, and Crystal, Whirlen's former stage assistant. Fred's mouth drops open when he sees her, to Daphne's extreme irritation. From them, the gang learns how sightings of a giant gryphon have been scaring away all the students and teaching staff. The gang smells trouble and decides to investigate.
