The ceremony took place on Saturday March 20, 1948 at the Shrine Civic Auditorium. Agnes Moorehead & Dick Powell hosted. Genteleman's Agreement won best picture that year. Like all ceremonies prior to 1953 it was not televised. It was, however, broadcast live on ABC Radio. Only portions of the recorded ceremony survive. James Baskett received an Honorary Award making him the first African-American man to win an Academy Award for acting. Edmund Gwenn, at 71, was the oldest Oscar-winner to that time.
