Prompted by Gus, Margaret develops the fantasy that she is adopted. Preoccupation with the imminent Beachcombers' Ball prevents Molly and Nick from realizing what she is up to, until she confronts Nick with the accusation that he is her real father. Molly persuades her it is untrue by finally revealing the real story of her parents' death in a boating accident.
