GTA 3 on Sega Dreamcast? The classic console had been discontinued by the time the game first launched on PlayStation 2, but today it is a reality - thanks to a hardcore development team worked from a reverse-engineered, rebuilt version of the Rockstar engine. It's early days with this port, but already it's looking very impressive - as John reveals in this new DF Retro video.

What if we told you that OG Xbox played host to an open world racing game that rendered at native 720p? That's just one of the technical feats delivered by the Wreckless/Double STEAL series of games. John Linneman is joined by Andrew Elmore for a look back at both games, including the bizarre PS2 and GameCube ports of the first game, before moving on to the technological masterpiece that is the Japan-only Double Steal: The Second Clash.

Previously 'locked' to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (disregarding a very different PS2 offering), Sonic Unleashed is the subject of a recompilation effort that takes the original Xbox 360 code, recompiled for PC with many extras - all based on original 360 assets. A unique game from a very different era is now playable on PC... and it holds up beautifully on modern PC hardware!

Coming to all PC gamers on March 18th, we got early access to the Half-Life 2 RTX demo - and it's stunning. In an extended version of our Retro PC Time Capsule formula, John and Alex stack up the new RTX version of the classic game running on a 12900K/RTX 5090 up against the original 2004 release version of the game, operating on period-appropriate PC hardware. How far we've come in just over 20 years!

The Retro PC Time Capsule format returns once more - but this time in the context of a brand-new game. Oblivion Remastered on PC running maxed out on a 12900K/RTX 5090 system is stacked up against the 2006 original, running on period appropriate hardware - a Pentium D 3.0GHz processor paired with the (then) almighty Radeon X800 XT. Just how much of a remastering effort is this? John and Alex assess the remastering work, and fret about stuttering ahead of Alex's upcoming performance review.

Produced by talented Polish developer, People Can Fly, the original Painkiller was incredibly impressive from a technological perspective back at launch in 2004. Today, thanks to Nvidia's RTX Remix technology, the game receives a full path-traced upgrade. It's still work-in-progress, it's punishingly heavy in terms of performance fully maxed - but it's certainly something special. Alex looks back at the original game and what the modding team has delivered so far.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer - also known as Shutokō Battle - has a rich and varied history across multiple console generations, and now in 2025, it has returned on PC in early access form. It's a game that has a particular place in the heart of John Linneman, who takes a look at the history of the franchise - and a project that gains additional perspective as it was produced while John spends a month in Tokyo itself.

In a special presentation, Alex Battaglia takes a look at Doom past and present, discussing the massive technological leap delivered by John Carmack back in 1993 - and the vastly expensive technology required to get playable frame-rates - through to the extra scope and demands of Doom 2 and the incredible per-pixel lighting of Doom 3. It's a series defined by technological innovation pushing PC hard - as exemplified by our final game in focus - Doom: The Dark Ages.
