In 1938 the amateur pianist Ursula (Maria Furtwängler) married the singer Wolfgang (Pasquale Aleardi). The war tears the couple apart: while Ursula and two children struggle with her parents in Gdansk, her husband is condemned as a deserter. Thanks to tragic entanglements, the lovers consider each other dead at the end of the war. Only in 1957 does Ursula see her long-married Wolfgang again ... What sounds like the headbirth of a Schmonzettschreiber is based on facts: In the novel "Vom Glück just a shadow", Uwe-Karsten Heye reconstructed the life story of his mother, who died in 1992. Miguel Alexandre ("The Woman from Checkpoint Charlie") tells it as a saga of a pragmatic but indomitable survivor. The carefully arranged historical panorama from the Nazi era, the young GDR and the economic miracle FRG seems sometimes sensitive, sometimes hypothermic, but still moving.
