Eric Martin (Harald Leipnitz), a well-known London fashion photographer, is visited by his brother Philip (Peter Thom), who is returning from military service in Hamburg. He tells him a strange story: he had to travel on to Dublin that same day because an Irish comrade named Sean Reynolds had been run over in Hamburg. The visit is intended for Reynolds' widow. As Philip leaves, Eric has no way of knowing that he has seen his brother alive for the last time. A few days later he was found dead in the Royal Falcon Hotel in Maidenhaid. At first it looks like suicide. As it quickly turns out, Philip never went to Ireland, but immediately stayed in this hotel, where he spent several days and always read a book of poetry in the reading room.
