Killers Behind Bars
Anthony Hardy (2x4)
: 04, 2013
Professor of Criminology, David Wilson looks into the case of another of Britain's modern serial killers, as this chilling series concludes.
This week, he explores the crimes of Anthony Hardy, termed The Camden Ripper, who brutally killed Elizabeth Valad and Brigitte MacClennan in December 2002. The murders were exposed when a homeless man, foraging in rubbish bins for food, found human remains in a bag. The trail led police to a Camden flat occupied by Anthony Hardy, a man with a history of violence and mental illness.
Inside the flat, investigators discovered a hacksaw with human skin still attached to the blade, an electric jigsaw power tool and a woman's torso wrapped in bin liners. Hardy achieved sexual gratification by posing his victims' bodies after death and taking explicit photographs of their naked corpses. In total, two bodies – those of prostitutes Valad and MacClennan – were recovered, but Professor Wilson seeks to investigate whether Hardy has claimed more lives.
He also looks into the story of Sally White, whose death was controversially attributed to natural causes by a pathologist, after her corpse was found on Hardy's bed. The professor looks for possible connections between Hardy and unsolved murders that took place in similar circumstances. His journey leads him to interview a number of people who knew Hardy as long ago as 1991, and who express their surprise that more victims have not come to light.
