Morena welcomes Santinha's son as if he were her own, willing to give him her mother's love. José Inocêncio, suffering, is rude to Jacutinga. Padre Santo comforts Jacutinga, who leaves the farm. The newborn doesn't take the bottle and doesn't stop crying, much to Morena's distress. José Inocêncio suffers from grief, unhappy and in tears. Inácia also suffers and tries to console him.
