Dogtanian is awoken from a dream of Juliette by her uncle, who tells him he was brought into their house unconscious and can stay as long as he wants. He and Dogtanian rush out to watch a fight, which turns out to be Athos, the strongest of the Musketeers, fighting four of the Cardinal's Guards with his bare hands. Dogtanian learns of the rivalry between the two groups. One of the defeated guards happens to bear a strong resemblance to the Musketeer Porthos. Dressed in an identical uniform, he robs civilians while claiming to be Porthos. Dogtanian surprises him in the act of taking money from two women, and chases him. In the forest they encounter the third of the Muskehound trio, Aramis. He discourages the false Porthos from stealing his horse but will not help Dogtanian chase the thief, preferring to pray for his soul The Captain of the Guards, Widimer, leads a band of men to arrest Porthos.
