The story follows a soldier who, after the war, is left with nothing and makes a pact with the devil. In exchange for wealth and a bear's skin, which he must wear, the soldier agrees not to wash, groom, or pray for seven years. During this time, he is known as Bearskin and faces social ostracism due to his appearance. However, he remains kind and generous, helping those in need with his newfound wealth. Near the end of his seven-year ordeal, he meets a poor man with three daughters. Bearskin offers to marry one of the daughters, who reluctantly agrees due to his appearance but eventually falls in love with his kind heart. When the seven years are up, Bearskin's pact ends, and he is restored to his former handsome self. The devil loses his bet, and Bearskin lives happily ever after with his wife.
