Innocent and Simplicie, who live in the country, have a dream: to go to Paris. Eventually their father complies with their demand. Their trip to the capital is eventful but they are helped by two Polish men they meet on their way. In Paris, Simplicie is staying with her aunt, Madame Bonbeck, a cantankerous widow who scares the poor girl whose only support is her nanny. Innocent is sent to a boarding-school where he soon becomes the other pupils' punching bag. Now, both children want to escape from their new place.
