Motor Balancing and Vibration Analysis with a Headphone Speaker (2015x18)
: 01, 2015
Vibration analysis is a well know tool in heavy industry. But what can the Do It Yourself-er use to balance motors cheaply?
I'll show you how with a free program; Audacity and an earbud to measure the vibration, natural frequency and nodes of any motor.
Using the sound card input as an oscilloscope is more accurate and versatile than using my Rigol 1054z. The frequencies encountered in mechanical systems are mostly within the range of human hearing. The very same bandwith that computer sound cards are designed to deal with...
Audacity is a free program that includes some very powerful tools that will allow us to filter the signal and then do a FFT to show the amplitude of the frequencies that make up the vibration in a mechanical system. We can use the amplitude of the various frequencies to determine how best to balance a motor.
