Is your child’s brain at risk by playing footy? Professional sporting codes including AFL, NRL and Rugby have put a lot of effort into improving how they deal with concussions on the field. But this isn't necessarily filtering down to the amateur and junior levels. And when it comes to kids, experts argue there’s even more to worry about. Neuroscientist Dave Ellemberg says his research dispels the myth that children’s brains recover more quickly than adults. "The developing brain is actually more fragile to the impact of a concussion," Dr Ellemberg says.
