Ichinoseki Kazuo, a high school student, is a popular gymnast who is set to compete in the Inter-High School Championships. After school, Kazuo practices on the rings and feels pain in his left arm, but he endures it and continues practicing. His childhood friend, Furukawa Toshie, notices something strange about Kazuo's left arm and calls his mother, who then takes Kazuo to Tezuka Clinic for a checkup. He is diagnosed with the early symptoms of a vertebral column, but Kazuo continues practicing in preparation for the Inter-High School Championships. As a result, the condition of his left arm worsens. Black Jack examines him at Dr. Tezuka's request and determines that the only option is to amputate his arm.
