When the floor collapsed from beneath them, there were at least 31 girls – possibly as many as 35 –inside the cramped room. The building began to crumble on the south side; the floor fell nearly eight feet straight down and disintegrated, trapping the children in a stone vault with a four-foot-deep pool of foul water.
