A rich benefactor, on behalf of whom Colonel Sir James Davery turns to Holmes, prefers to remain anonymous. The issue is very delicate: Violet del Melville, daughter of the famous general, has fallen madly in love with the Austrian baron Grunner, an absolutely unscrupulous man, a well-known hunter of talent and suspected of having even murdered many of his former companions; but a heart in love does not want to listen to reasons, not even those reported by a famous and important investigator which is Shelock Holmes! In his help comes a certain Kitty Winter, formerly in love with Grunner who after being seduced and abandoned by the Baron seeks revenge. Miss Winter reveals the existence of a diary that the impostor jealously guards and constantly updates, taking note of names, meticulous and complete descriptions even of photographic portraits. Surely if Violet could see and read that notebook written personally by her boyfriend it would be decided to break the promise of marriage. Holmes and Watson will have a lot to do and will have to look back: Grunner is smart and dangerous.
