Sherlock Holmes is contacted by the groom John Mason, worried about the strange events that are happening at Shochombe Hall, the prestigious estate where he works for some time without news of Lady Beatrice Falder, who owns the estate along with his brother Sir Robert Noberton. John suspects that behind the disappearance there is the hand of the latter, burdened by serious debts with an extortionist, also disappeared into thin air, and in the grip of signs of psychic imbalance.
