Dramatised by James Andrew Hall from the novel by Francis Brett Young, about a doctor who, after dealing with a fatal accident, makes a journey which conjours up memories of his past, especially his relationship with his spoiled brother Harold, who is sent to Eton, while he makes do with the local Grammar School. , And he recalls his first meeting with Edie-one of the two women with whom he will fall in love. He also discovers the truth about his father's secret life.
After the death of Eugene Dakers and the discovery of the family's precarious financial position, Jonathan is offered an unexpected loan. He buys a partnership as a GP in Wednesford where he meets the beautiful and enigmatic Rachel.

Helped by Rachel, Jonathan saves the life of a child but is then forced to stand trial before the Medical Committee. He finds an ally in Rachel's friend, John Morse - and he needs all the help he can get, as the Committee is headed by Dr Craig!
