The Human Adventure

Selon la Bible, l'Arche d'alliance renfermant les tables de la Loi, les Dix Commandements dictés par Yahvé à Moïse, a accompagné le peuple hébreu dans sa conquête de la Terre promise. Au Xe siècle avant notre ère, le roi David l'aurait installée à Jérusalem, futur berceau du monothéisme. Mais après le siège de la ville et la destruction du Premier Temple par les Babyloniens en 587 avant J.-C., le coffre sacré disparaît à jamais. Depuis, l'Arche mythique aux pouvoirs mystérieux ne cesse d'enflammer l'imagination des hommes et la convoitise des chercheurs de trésors. Mais a-t-elle seulement existé ? Et la Bible peut-elle être considérée comme un récit historiquement fiable ?

Two thousand years ago, it was a flourishing city in the middle of what is now a Syrian desert. At the crossroads of trade routes, Palmyra attracted caravanners from Mesopotamia, India and China. In what remains of its ruins, rediscovered by Europeans in the 17th century, its numerous necropolises bear witness to a prosperous past. Carved in limestone in the first centuries of our era, the faces of the representatives - men, women and children - of its greatest families adorn the walls of its tombs. Since 2012, Danish archaeologist Rubina Raja has been leading a long-term project to find, document and retrace the family trees and daily life of these Palmyrenians.

From the 9th to the 1st century BCE, the Etruscans were one of the most powerful peoples of the Mediterranean basin, leaving behind impressive necropolises, vestiges of sanctuaries, and even entire cities. How did they attain such power? How far did they extend their dominion and influence? What were the causes of their decline?
