Commissioner Juve accompanies the Marquise de Langrune by train to Paris, to to collect the money from a winning lottery ticket. During the journey, she is strangled. When Fandor arrives at the prison to interview Dollon it is reported that he hanged himself in his cell. However, the body has disappeared!
