Salma Hayek, in full Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez, broke barriers as one of the first Latina actresses to establish a successful film career in the United States. Her first roles were as Fabiola in Un nuevo amanecer and as the named lead in Teresa, a Mexican daytime television drama. Moving to Los Angeles in 1991, she was cast in Desperado (1995) which catapulted her into stardom. In 2002, she both produced and starred in Frida, a film that was nominated for six academy awards. She has also lent her voice to several animated films, including Puss in Boots (2011) and The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)
