A phenomenon that lies at the heart of the formation of identity and, above all, of the Brazilian people, African slavery began in a context where the European powers saw the colonization of the newly discovered lands on this side of the Atlantic only as an extractive venture at first, and mercantilist in a second phase, when powers such as England found themselves impelled to conquer new consumer markets for the products that resulted from their industrial revolution.
