Many of these live on today, including the Murrawarri, several members of whom in 2013 came together and declared the independence of the Murrawarri Republic situated on the border of the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland. Their argument for doing so is that when the British arrived they never defeated the Murrawarri in a war, nor did the Murrawari ever sign any treaty giving ownership over their land to the British or the subsequent Australian government and that therefore the Murrawarri Republic was a state which was 'continually independent' and no officially part of the Australian state at all.
