Not as many people know that the Dutch East India Company (VOC or Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) also controlled territory in parts of India and Sri Lanka. This included trading posts, forts, towns and factories in Surat, the Malabar Coast, Coromandel, and Bengal in places like Cochin, Surat, Pulicat, Nagapatam, and Pipely. In this video I talk about the forgotten history of Dutch India, how the first trading centres were either established or captured from the Portuguese, what attracted the Dutch there in the first place, and why India eventually became a British domain.
